Get Writing for World Book Day

In celebration of World Book day, children from across the borough took part in a book reviewing competition. Children who attend homework clubs across Bury were asked to write about their most favourite book.

The quantity and quality of entries received impressed staff members who judged the competition. The eventual winner was 12 year old Ben Fairhurst from Woodhey High School, for his critique on 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix'. Ben won a book token, which was presented to him by Diana Sorrigan (principal librarian) on Thursday the 22 April.

Shadowing the Experts

Children at Ramsbottom homework club have once again put their reviewing skills into action, by taking part in a national shadowing project. The shortlists for the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals represent a superb selection of children's books, chosen by a panel of experienced children's librarians.

The shadowing scheme invites children and young people from across the country to read these shortlisted books, assess them by the same criteria used by the librarian judges, and share their views with other reading groups.
Visit http://carnegiegreenaway.org.uk//shadow/post/group.asp?groupid=1884 for a look at the reviews offered by these talented young critics.

Improving your hmk centres

Topping Fold library and the first floor of Prestwich library are currently undergoing major refurbishment. Homework clubs will therefore not be available at these two libraries for the remainder of the academic year. To make up the shortfall, sessions at Unsworth library have been extended to Monday evening 3:30 - 7:30pm and Tuesday 3:30 - 5:30pm.

Any feedback about homework clubs, from teachers and parents would be greatly appreciated.
