CURRICULUM

The school aims to provide a broad, balanced, relevant curriculum to meet the needs of each individual pupil. As a voluntary controlled Church of England/Methodist Primary

School, R.E. teaching is based on the agreed syllabus, which is used in County and Voluntary Controlled Schools.  This is based largely on the Christian ethic, although aspects of other religions may be discussed.  Parents wishing to exercise their right to withdraw their children from religious worship or religious instruction should notify the Head Teacher in writing.

The teaching time is allocated to the core subjects of English, Mathematics Science and ICT in addition to the foundation subjects of History, Geography, Design Technology, Music, Art, Physical Education and R.E.  All subjects are taught according to National Curriculum Guidelines.  Policies for all subjects may be obtained from the Head Teacher.

Sex education is included in various aspects of the National Curriculum and Y6 children are given more detailed information, which includes a video on puberty and reproduction.  Personal, Social Health and Citizenship Education is also included in the syllabus.

All year 5 children participate in an intensive swimming programme.  Children swim daily for a four week period. Radcliffe Hall is proud of its sporting tradition.  Regular competitions are held with other Primary Schools in the Bury area in the following:

Netball X Country Swimming

Football Athletics

Rounders Cricket

Music tuition can be provided at school by Bury Music Service in woodwind, brass and string  and keyboard instruments  The School has both a Junior and Infant Choir. Recorder and Guitar lessons are also available from school staff. Educational visits are organised throughout the year, in the hope that parents will volunteer to contribute to the whole of the cost of the visit.

Parents’ Evenings are held two evenings per year (Autumn and Spring) when parents are invited to look at work and discuss their child.  Written reports are issued at the end of the summer term.  Outside these official parents’ evenings, parents are welcome to discuss their child with the Head or Teacher, at a mutually convenient time.

Children with Special Educational Needs (S.E.N.) will be monitored carefully and work will be differentiated accordingly.  Some children are withdrawn from their class on a weekly basis and are taught by the School’s Special Needs Teacher.  Parents will be frequently informed of progress and assessment outcomes.  Outside agencies (Health Service, Psychological Service, Central Learning Support, Behaviour Support) may be contacted if required.  If Parents have any concerns about the school curriculum these will be dealt with firstly by the Headteacher, who will advise parents on their next course of action should the complaint not be resolved.
