These documents are offered as guidance on the use of the Internet in Schools and Services that support schools.

Schools / Services and central education services should have an appropriate Policy in place before pupils are given access to the Internet.

Any Internet Policy should:

• ensure that the use of the technology conforms to the highest possible standards;
• inform the different groups of their roles and responsibilities;
• develop guidelines for good practice;
• maintain security of access to protect the users and equipment from potentially unsuitable and dangerous materials, including pornography, racist propaganda and viruses;
• offers a procedure for reporting and recording inappropriate sites visited by accident;
• encourage the presentation of a positive image of the School / Service and Authority on the World Wide Web;
• ensure that information can be easily transferred across the Internet, by complying with agreed protocols and procedures.
• promote appropriate behaviour when communicating with a potentially unknown audience at a distance.
