It will be recognised that some of the newer packages can perform many functions, e.g. Word 2000 could be used to DTP, Web author, create Multimedia and even perform some of the functions of a Spreadsheet. However, schools need to give students as wide an experience as possible and it is appropriate to have two different kinds of the same type of software to allow students to compare the their facilities and decide which is the more appropriate for particular task.

There is also the need for content - clip art, CD-ROMs, access to the Internet - and curriculum specific software.
