· A Search Engine is a Data Base of Web Sites; it is not a comprehensive list of what is available on the web at any particular time.
· Search Engines are self-selecting - that is web authors choose the Search Engines to list their sites, Search Engines do not actively seek sites to promote.
· Many Search Engines do not carry out vetting or any other form of editorial control.
· It can take up to six weeks between submitting a Web Site and the site being available from the Search Engine.
The consequence of this is:
· You will never have access to all the information on the Internet through one Search Engine.
· The results you obtain from a search engine may not match your expectations.
· When using the Internet for serious research you will need to use a number of Search Engines.
