Enhancing Subject Teaching using ICT (CPD)

This DIES supported project will support teachers in developing the use of ICT to enhance subject teaching. It is currently being delivered through a commercial model, promoted by the companies involved and the DfES.

Almost all subjects are involved. Commercial companies are producing website and online subject ICT CPD for teachers involving:

• Website

• Lessons

• Resources to deliver those lessons

• Case studies (e.g. video snapshots of teaching plus commentary)

• Guidance and principles

• Other resources

• Opportunities to evaluate lessons and seek online tutor feedback

• Practical ICT advice

• Links to other materials e.g. KS3 website, Becta etc ......

Subjects had a DfES consultant advising the companies on the material to ensure alignment with the Strategy. The materials, websites and services all undergo various other checks before being published, and have had steers from major agencies (e.g. QCA, Becta)

Schedule:

• Primary Literacy and Numeracy and KS3 Science have rolled out to some pathfinder LEAS.

• A DIES promotion pack is being prepared for all LEAS for distribution in the autumn term (November consultant briefing).

• Full national subject roll out in January 2004 to coincide with Bett 2004. English is being produced by Indigo-visions.

KS3 Strategy implications:

• The DfES is preparing an LEA pack which we can explore at November Consultant network meetings. This will include a CDROM sample of lessons and activities on the website and Will provide a discussion opportunity with consultants.

• CE0s and CPD Coordinators will also get a pack.

• Consultants will be given password access to the website to allow them to see and use the materials.

• Companies will be willing to 'train' orpresent' in schools or LEAS.

• The CPD may be bought and used by whole LEA, whole school, departments.

• Consultants may and, probably, will find themselves responding to the materials over time in lessons, department meetings, training courses, networks, as. and when appropriate.

• Consultants will not be promoting these materials, but, clearly, will need to know about them as they provide an opportunity to build a more shared understanding of how to develop, share and respond to good use of ICT in English planning, teaching and learning.

Key Stage 3 Strategy Cross-Strand ICT Project (ICTAC)

As yet, this is still being devised, but the most likely outcomes will be:

• Mapping subject objectives against ICT objectives

• Sample lessons or units to exemplify mapping of objectives - including some reference to the CPD project

• Case studies of effective subject implementation of ICTAC

• Guidance manual for school SMTs on 'principles and practice' of whole school ICT - including some reference to the CPD project

• ICT In series, focusing on principles, guidance, with some exemplification

These materials will provide schools with a common and consistent platform from which to develop further use of ICT in subjects to raise standards.
