Greenhill Primary School

Information
Curriculum

Greenhill School is committed to providing a broad balanced curriculum that develops the intellectual, creative, physical, moral and spiritual potential of each pupil. It is our aim for all our children to experience success by providing appropriate challenges to prepare them well for their future lives. As a result, we plan the curriculum with individual children in mind within the framework of the legal requirements of the Foundation Stage & National Curriculum. These are reviewed regularly as children progress through the school.

Foundation Stage Curriculum
The Foundation Stage Curriculum comprises of six areas of learning that are required to be taught to the Reception children. The areas are as follows:
Personal, Social & Emotional development; Communication, Language & Literacy; Mathematical development; Knowledge & Understanding of the world; Physical development and Creative development.

National Curriculum & RE
The National Curriculum subjects are considered compulsory and hence all children must study the following subjects at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2:
English, Maths, Science, Design & Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, ICT and French.

Within each broad subject heading, there are detailed requirements as to what precisely should be taught. These requirements are called programmes of study. The programme of study is similar to the syllabus for each subject.

R.E.
Religious Education forms part of the curriculum for all students. The school is not of any particular religious denomination although statutory Religious studies are followed in accordance with the agreed syllabus of the Local Education Authority.

Collective Worship
Each day begins with an assembly; these vary from simple gatherings to more complex occasions that involve the work of the children. Parents have a right to withdraw their children from such instruction and Acts of Worship. Those who wish to do so should notify the Headteacher in writing.

Curriculum - Beyond The Curriculum
The school has undergone a major review of the curriculum and has re-organised and designed an enriched curriculum for KS1 and KS2. The review of the curriculum has led to more genuine cross-curricular links being created in all classes. This in turn has led to topics studied becoming more meaningful and the children learning concepts in greater depth. The school has implemented a new school timetable that allows for learning experiences beyond the national requirements. Staff have familiarised themselves successfully with these new developments and enjoy the opportunity to extend the children's learning.

Educational Visits
All pupils have the opportunity to take part in educational visits. The visits are organised to support the work in school and are planned to comply with the highest standards of safety recommendations and regulations.

Theme Days
The school holds a range of theme days throughout the year, such as, French days, Art days, Class topic days and a Whole School Open day. These days are very popular with parents and children alike.
