The School Council is a very important part of St Mary's as our children and their opinions matter to us.

Why not take the time to meet our councillors, learn about what we do as well as the exciting things that we have planned for this year. We also have the answers to those questions that you might be asking.

Let's answer those questions for you...

What is a school council?

A School Council is made up of 12 councillors and 12 vice councillors. Each class has two representatives for their class which enables all children to have a voice.

Have you met our school councillors yet? If not, why not? Why not have a look at 'Meet our School Councillors' to learn a little bit about them, you won't regret it.

How are representatives choosen?

Each child in every class nominates one person that they want to represent them on the school council that academic year. The votes are then collected and the child with the most nominations is chosen as the class school councillor. The child with the second most nominations is the vice-councillor.

Why do we need a school council?

Giving children the opportuity to voice their opinions and concerns allows them to take pride and ownership of their school. This is an important aspect of their development at St Mary's and one that we take very seriously. The children are always listened to as they are very important to us.

What have the school council done so far?

Since the school council has been established they have achieved many things such as a new smarter school uniform (I'm sure you'll agree that we look great!), a healthy fruit tuck shop to cater for those mid-morning hunger pangs and play equipment for each year including the climbing frame!

Oh, how could we forget, we also chose the new sports equpment in the sports hall with the help of Mr Hoban, Mr Heaton and Miss McCombe!! However, we haven't stopped there...

What have you got planned for the future?

Well, as you will have noticed the school is forever changing. This school council team is currently concentrating on improving the school grounds. We are in the process of helping to plan the new playground with the support of Mrs Eccles, Mr Hoban and Miss McCombe. Already there are buddy benches, picnic tables, balancing pencils and an entertainment stage for all those creative children at St Mary's. You do however, have to keep your eyes peeled for any future changes as it isn't finished and there is even more to come so watch this space!!!
